Cooking your way around the world

Cooking your way around the world

You can learn a lot about a destination by seeing its famous sights. But if you really want to get to know a place? Get into the kitchen.

Taking a cooking class while traveling has become one of my favorite ways to experience a destination. It’s not just about learning how to make a new dish—it’s about discovering the stories, traditions, ingredients, and people behind the food.

Instead of simply ordering something from a menu, imagine wandering through a local market to choose fresh ingredients, learning why a particular spice is important to the region, or having someone’s grandmother teach you the “right” way to prepare a recipe that’s been passed down for generations.

And yes, you usually get to eat your homework. That alone makes it a pretty great class!

Cooking classes also give you something many traditional tours don’t: interaction. You’re chopping, stirring, tasting, laughing, asking questions, and spending time with local people and fellow travelers. Those moments often become some of the stories you remember most.

The best part? The experience doesn’t have to end when your vacation does.

Months—or even years—later, you can recreate that dish at home. Suddenly, the smell of a certain spice or the first bite of something you learned to make transports you right back to that little kitchen in Spain, Morocco, Argentina, or wherever your travels took you.

Souvenirs eventually collect dust. Photos get buried in your phone.

But learning to make something delicious?

That’s a little piece of your vacation you can bring home and enjoy again and again.

Pack your bags. Find your joy.
